Puppy 101
The Puppy 101 is about the foundations of relationship building.
The most important thing to teach your pup is how to exist without nervousness or fear in the world:
how to walk past other dogs and animals calmly, to want to engage with YOU, to want to engage with YOU without nipping or jumping or barking, to relax and self-soothe in the crate or separate from you, not to grab things that are not theirs, how to walk on a leash without pulling or dashing about, how to wait when you ask them to, how to greet humans politely, how to come when you call them.
These things are my focus with puppies. Mechanical commands are good, and have their place in helping to teach the above, but are not my main focus.
- Working on Potty Training.
- Working on Crate Training.
- Informing you what Socialization is and what is important about it and what isn’t.
- Discussing what Leadership is.
- Working on correcting nipping.
- Working on establishing a routine for your pup.
- Showing you how to get your pup used to being handled – so she can not fear the vet or groomer.
- Teaching your pup how to get up onto the Place Bed and wait calmly.
- Teaching SIT and DOWN and RECALL (come when called).
- Getting your pup used to being on a leash and walking on a leash.
- Teaching your pup their NAME – so they look at you when they hear it.
- Teaching your pup how to look at you and hold eye contact
- Teaching your pup that listening to YOU and being WITH you is FUN.
- Consulting you about how to be in charge of where your dog is in the house at all times.
